Czech pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai - UAE

Pavilion Concept

The national pavilion at the General World Exposition EXPO 2020 in Dubai will be built based on the design by young Czech architects from the company Formosa AA s.r.o., who are also doctoral students at the CTU - faculty of architecture.
It will be built by an international consortium of companies MCI Prague s.r.o. and the Swiss company NÜSSLI.

The final round of the tender for the pavilion of the Czech Republic for the Expo 2020 in Dubai received five proposals - five more had to be eliminated with pre-proposal submissions and the sixth during the sub¬mission of competing models. The winning design caught the attention of the expert committee with its original take on an organic structure growing around the quadratic shape of the exhibition space.

The pavilion design refers to the S.A.W.E.R. system, which creates water out of the air using solar energy and cultivates the desert using subsurface cultures. It is also the technological core of the national ex¬position. The organic structure made out of bioplastic pipes is directly connected to the S.A.W.E.R. system turning a passive decoration into an active part of the system.

The pipes grow out of a garden created by cultivating the desert in direct contact with the centre of gravity of the pavilion. In the exterior, a cloud providing shade for the flower beds and visitors entering the pavilion and it flows into the interior as a source of crystal clear and cool water the interior as a source of cold, crystal-clear water. It directly com-municates with the monumental installation of designer crystal clear glass, which is located in one of the axes of the entrance hall.

The expert committee, made up of prominent architects and members of the business world as well as members of the academia, expressed the opinion that the architecture of the pavilion is distinctive and origi¬nal enough. At the moment, the Czech Republic is one of the first EXPO participants to present the design of the pavilion. The only other mem¬bers that have done so thus far are Luxembourg, New Zealand, Switzerland and, of course, the United Arab Emirates.

The Czech pavilion will be located in the zone of "Sustainability" on a plot with an area of 2200 meters squared and, just like at the EXPO 2015 in Milan, it will be next to one of the main entrances into the exhibition grounds, making it one of the few pavilions that are also visible from the side. The organisers assume that the World Exposition, which will take place from the 20th of October 2020 until the 10th of April 2021, will be visited by 25 million people - 70% of which will be from abroad.
