History - Expo 2005 Aichi, Japan - Qatar pavilion
Qatar Pavilion highlights the rich history of Qatar and the development it is now undergoing. It introduces Doha and the Qatari culture to the people of Japan and to the world. The pavilion showcases the country's history, culture and society, economy, industry, education and the preparations to host the 15th Asian Games in 2006.
Visitors can understand through its exhibits that Qatar, as an exporter of clean energy - natural gas - is not only preserving the rich and varied fauna and flora in the Arabian Gulf but is also contributing to global environment protection.
The 648-square-meter pavilion depicts the past, present and future of Qatar through interactive displays, live music and traditional craftsmen and women at work.
The objective behind Qatar's participation is to give prominence to the State of Qatar worldwide and highlight balanced development in all aspects of life.

Qatar pavilion at Aichi World Expo 2005, by pico
Pico "designed and miniaturized" Qatar into a 648sqm display to demonstrate the deep contrats between modern and old Qatar. Interactive touch-screen displays engaged the viewers while revolving round a traditional Qatari setting.
Traditional fishing boat and handicraft displays were exhibited with live demos while a tartan running track with 'athletes' was also constructed to promote the up-coming Asian Games 2006 in Doha. Visitors wrere introduced to the largest educational project in the Middle East, the Qatar Foundation, before exiting via a cinema showing the past, present and future of Qatar.

The UAE Pavilion from Expo Milano 2015...
The UAE Pavilion from Expo Milano 2015 will be relocated to the UAE once the event has finished, following in the footsteps of the UAE’s Pavilion from Shanghai Expo 2010.

Hello 2020 takes a look at the UAE’s sustainable pavilion design for Milan’s Expo 2015, as the event draws closer to kick off.
Expo Milano is less than a year away. The 2015 edition of the Expo kicks off in May next year and spectacular designs for the UAE’s pavilion have been created by leading architect firm Foster + Partners.
The practice, famous in the UAE for its Index Tower in Dubai’s DIFC district, as well as its contribution to the development of Masdar City in Abu Dhabi, has described the design as ‘bringing the planning principles of the traditional desert city to Milan’.
“We are very proud to be chosen again to create the national pavilion for the UAE,” said Norman Foster, chairman and founder of Foster + Partners. “Our challenge has been to design for two climates – to create a naturally cool, comfortable space for visitors in Milan, while considering the pavilion’s ultimate reconstruction in the Emirates, where there is a need to provide shade from the sun.
“The design reflects our investigations into the form of ancient cities and our appreciation for the desert landscape. It also maximises the opportunities presented by the elongated site – the dramatic canyon.like entrance will welcome people inside, and the channels between the high walls provide intuitive circulation, naturally leading visitors to the auditorium, exhibition and restaurant spaces.”
With more than 20 million people expected to visit the event, the pavilion will expose a potentially huge audience to everything the UAE has to offer. Designed with a capacity for up to 785 visitors an hour, the 140 metre long building has a form familiar to those who have seen the company’s work in Masdar City.
The pavilion’s self-shading street is formed in the shadow of two 12.metre high walls, which curve their way from the entrance of the 4,386m2 site to the main exhibition structure, which boasts a 1,175m2 exhibition area.
Sustainability is a key concern of the design team, which is aiming to achieve a LEED Platinum rating for the pavilion. The fact that the pavilion will be dismantled and relocated to the UAE, once Expo Milano is over, will add to the structure’s sustainability credentials. The UAE’s pavilion at the Shanghai Expo in 2010, also designed by Foster + Partners, went through the same relocation process and has since been reassembled on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi.
Priority use of local materials with recycled content will also give the structure an edge in the bid for LEED certification. According to Foster + Partners there will be CO2 absorbing materials used and other resources have been ‘selected for their durability and long term re-use value’.
Energy will be generated through the use of photovoltaic panels, used in combination with solar thermal hot water panels, with the aim of achieving a 30 percent saving over the
use of conventional technology. Additional hot water will be created by recovering heat energy from the cooling plant.
“Everything that we have done is connected to the UAE and its efforts to achieve sustainable solutions,” said Gerard Evenden, the project’s leading architect and a senior partner at Foster + Partners. “We draw on natural landscape and vernacular architecture as well as modern designs that are themselves influencedby traditional forms.
“We had to design for conditions in both Milan and Abu Dhabi. It was a great architectural challenge.”

Impact of Expo 2020 Dubai on the wider region
This is the UAE’s opportunity to use this mega event platform to truly engage the global community and drive advancements and innovative solutions in the fields of mobility, sustainability and economic development.
Running from 20 October 2020 through 10 April 2021, the Expo coincides with the country’s Golden Jubilee and will serve as a springboard to launch a progressive and sustainable vision for the coming decades.
A strong legacy will be realised, buoyed by accelerated infrastructure development, a detailed urban planning legacy and knowledge base development, and underpinned by a long-term strategic UAE national training and development programme.
Preliminary estimates indicate that the economic impact generated by the Expo between now and 2021 will be approximately €17.7 billion – much of this value is expected to be retained within the region.
In the next six years, over 275,000 jobs are estimated to be created in and around the region to service the Expo, across sectors including tourism, aviation, construction and real estate, engineering and infrastructure, logistics and transportation, and hospitality and retail.
The World Expo builds on the UAE’s natural strength as a global business hub offering access to a market of nearly 2.9 billion people, and will open more doors to strong investment and partnership opportunities across the MENASA region.
Overall the positive halo effect of the Expo 2020 Dubai will leave behind a strong transformative social and economic legacy across the region.

Learn more about the importance of mobility in bringing 25 million people to Expo 2020 Dubai
The Wider Area
Efficient logistics improve the way we work together and have become a crucial part of our modern, globalised society.
Our ambition is to host an event noted for its seamless operations and ease of access. That is why our sub-theme of Mobility will play such an integral role.
We anticipate 25 million visits to our event, with 70% of visitors expected to travel from international locations.
And with 33% of the world’s population within a four-hour flight, 66% within an eight-hour flight and an aviation infrastructure that currently caters for a flight either landing or taking off every 90 seconds, access is easier than it has ever been.
Three international airports in Dubai International, Dubai World Central and Abu Dhabi International will serve the Expo audience and Dubai’s airports are expected to be the largest and busiest in the world by 2020.
Jebel Ali Port, the world’s third largest container dock, is situated just 10 minutes from the Expo 2020 Dubai site.
As part of our bid, a comprehensive visitor management study was undertaken, including city-wide traffic and movement flow analysis. As a result we have been able to put together a public transport strategy able to sustain vast audiences.
An extension to the Dubai Metro Red Line will be constructed to a dedicated station on the Expo site.
A bespoke low-emission bus service (ExpoRider) will transport visitors to and from the Expo from pick-up points throughout the UAE, situated in key hotel and major population areas. At these pick-up points, passengers will undergo ticket checks and security screening prior to boarding the ExpoRider buses in operation, eliminating the need for further checking when they reach the Expo Site, to facilitate faster processing through the entrances.
The UAE already has a world-class road infrastructure and the main connecting road between Dubai and Abu Dhabi runs directly past the site venue.
Mobility will also play an important role within the site venue. Each of our theme areas will be designed so that visitors are no more than 15-minutes walk from the central Al Wasl Plaza. It is here where our visitors will forge the connections that will make this Expo a success and create a legacy we can all share in.
The UAE is already a significant trade, commercial and service hub between East and West and at Expo 2020 Dubai we aim to showcase how our focus on efficient logistics and transportation systems will help us create the relationships that will define and support our future.
