The Amann-Cánovas-Maruri studio winner of the architecture competition of the Spanish Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai
The winning architectural project of the Spanish Pavilion for the Expo Dubai 2020, which has been chosen today by the jury appointed for this purpose and ratified by the Board of Directors of Acción Cultural Española (AC / E), has been proposed by the Amann-Cánovas-Maruri study (Extreme Temperatures Arquitectos SLP).
Under the motto "People and places" the project has been specially valued for its iconic strength, its sustainability criteria and a design based on the idea of total recycling of its materials.
The Pavilion, of about 6,000 m2, gives prominence to a large square covered by a series of conical volumes that have a climatic function to temper the public space. The square offers a series of domes covered with different materials that make reference to the most traditional insulation techniques in combination with innovative solutions. It responds to the principles of the circular economy and offers solutions that make it possible to plan a second life for the whole or some of its parts.
In the jury of the contest, chaired by the Executive Chairman of AC / E and General Commissioner of the Spanish Pavilion, Ibán García del Blanco, the following architects and experts of recognized prestige participated:
Ms. Olga Subirós (architect), Ms. Elisa Valero (architect), Mr. Carlos Puente (architect appointed by the Superior Council of the Associations of Architects of Spain - CSCAE), Mr. Javier Martín (architect and General Director of Housing of the Ministry of Development), Ms. Carmen Bueno (specialist in exhibition design and expert in Expos) and Mr. Fermín Vázquez (architect).
The Jury has awarded, together with the winner, a prize to each of the other five projects that were finalists: Estudio Carmen Pinos, SLP, Selgascano + FRPO, Estudio Herreros, SLP, Paredes Pedrosa Arquitectos, SLP, and Irisarri Piñera Arquitectos, between the 47 presented.
